Board Orientation Manual 2024

Conflict Resolution The BC Games Society wants all staff members to enjoy their working experience. Regrettably, conflict can occur in any working environment. To resolve conflict in a timely and fair manner, staff members should: 1. Respectfully speak directly to the other individual(s) involved. Often conflict arises due to misunderstandings and miscommunications. 2. If speaking to the individual does not resolve the situation, staff members should speak to the President and CEO. 3. The President and CEO will arrange for a meeting between those involved in the dispute, to determine how to resolve the issue. 4. If a resolution is not reached, or if the President and CEO is the subject of the concern, the issue may be brought to the Chair of the Board of Directors. If the BC Games Society is unable to resolve a workplace dispute, the individuals may be referred to mediation by an outside third party. Substance Use in the Workplace The BC Games Society is committed to providing a safe work environment and encourages personal health and wellness for all staff members. Any staff member reporting for work impaired by drugs including recreational cannabis or alcohol, or for any other reason, is considered unable to properly perform required duties and will not be allowed to work. Prescription drugs prescribed by the staff member's physician may be taken during work hours. If a staff member takes medication that may impact their safety at work, or affect work performance or productivity, including medical cannabis, the staff member is responsible for advising the President and CEO, so they can determine an appropriate plan. Accommodation Accommodation is the adjustment of the workplace, responsibilities, or job assignment to accommodate a staff member’s legitimate need connected to a ground protected under Human Rights law. The BC Games Society will accommodate staff members (to the point of undue hardship) if they: • Have an injury or illness that needs to be treated by impairment-causing prescription drugs; or • Have a substance use or addiction issue If a staff member requires accommodation, they must disclose information regarding their need for support to the President and CEO using Staff Member Request for Accommodation Form. Disclosure enables the President and CEO to help the staff member and manage risks. For more details on the BC Games Society’s Accommodation policies and procedures, see page 29 of this handbook.
