Board Orientation Manual 2024

Medical Services The Medical Services Directorate is responsible for the care of Games participants in the areas of first aid and physiotherapy, as well as the operation of a Games Medical Clinic. This Directorate arranges for a medical clinic to operate from approximately 5:30 am to 11:00 pm daily throughout the Games (on-call service after hours) as well as on-site medical coverage at all sport venues and special events. The general public is also cared for until local medical attention arrives. Volunteer Management – see “Each Directorate” section. Medical Clinic This Medical Clinic Chair area coordinates and manages a Medical Clinic for participants during the Games. The Clinic is staffed by medical doctors, nurses, first aiders, and physiotherapists and Medical Office Assistants are also required to assist with patient processing, report filing, and data input. The Medical Clinic is operational from the time of the first participants arrive in the community until approximately 11:00 pm on each day of the Games and until the last bus/flight departs after the Games. The intention of the Medical Clinic is to take pressure off the local healthcare system by preventing injuries that can be treated and/or resolved at the Games Medical Clinic from being directed to the public system. Physiotherapy The Physiotherapy Chair recruits and coordinates qualified physiotherapists to work at the Medical Clinic and certain sport venues to assist injured participants. Pre-competition taping is not required to be done by the Games Medical Services Directorate. Venue Medical The Venue Medical Chair area is responsible for recruiting individuals to provide an appropriate level of first aid coverage to participants and spectators at Games venues. Trained first aid personnel are required to attend sport venues for all competition and practice times, as well as be present at all Games events. The level of medical coverage is based on SportMedBC guidelines which determine if a sport is a high, medium, or low risk sport. For Games events, general first aid coverage is provided. The general public is also cared for until local medical attention arrives. Community Partners associated with the Directorate This Directorate may also form key partnerships with BC Ambulance Service and St. John Ambulance for the delivery of medical services at sport venues and/or spectator first aid at public Games events (such as the Opening Ceremony). If so, including a representative from the local organizations may be helpful to assist with planning for the Games. BC Games staff can assist with having these liaisons identified by the respective agencies if you do not have local contacts. The role of this representative would be to facilitate with the connection between their agency and the Games regarding the support from the agency.
