a) Size and Scope Staff outlined the four-phased plan that will be used to assess and develop strategies for adjusting the size of the Games between May 2023 and Sept 2026, for implementation at the 2028 BC Winter and BC Summer Games. A meeting with PSO/DSOs was held. PSO/DSOs were asked to complete a questionnaire; it was made clear that is if for feedback, not scoring for inclusion in the Games. General takeaways from the responses include the following: Accommodation model • Unique environment creates opportunities for team building. • Can be a challenging sleeping environment for coaches and officials. • Limited showers are a concern. • Blurred lines with respect to SafeSport in how adults mix with minors in an accommodation setting; Rule of 2. Coaching • Great coach development opportunity. • Current level of requirement is appropriate. • Can be challenging to find coaches willing to take on the added supervision responsibilities and stay in Games accommodation. Transportation • Issues/concerns tend to come mostly from parents. • Sports are generally appreciative of the model with positive feedback. Zone Qualifications • Some sports find timing of zone qualification events challenging, but overall, the model seems to be working. • More challenging in the remote zones. Sport Chair • Excellent opportunity for local club development and building hosting capacity. Alignment with sport goals and return on sport investment • Legacies of the Games are a key return on sport investment. • Opportunity for sports to showcase their performance pathway. • Alignment with sport-specific LTD is key. b) Powering Potential Fund Projects for 2024 BC Winter Games The Powering Potential Fund is a good tool for enhancing sport and community experiences in the Games community. Projects are selected through a needs assessment process in collaboration with the host society President/Vice President and Director of Sport after the completion of the Host Community Sport Meeting. Projects are required to be completed in time for the Games and must enhance the sport or participant experience and have a sport or community legacy benefit. The Powering Potential Fund is an effective tool to fill operational gaps, address sport equipment deficiencies, enhance community projects and collaborate with existing local initiatives. It becomes a strategic means to invest BC Games Society dollars early and more often to special projects while relieving the burden on host society operating budgets.
