Board Orientation Manual 2024

The following items of significance were noted: •

The one-time year-end funding of $2 million, which increased revenues significantly. We are grateful to the Minister and Ministry staff for their work on this. Without this additional funding, the organization would be under financial stress. • After the CRA GST Audit, the CRA has reclassified the society based on the assessment that the funding from government is a transfer of funds rather than a grant. We are now able to claim 100% of GST paid (as opposed to 50% previously). This resulted in $67K in revenue in 2023/24. • There is a significant surplus ($1,132,000) due to the additional funding received. This will be needed in the next fiscal to balance the budget – more will be discussed at the Board meeting. MOTION: Cheung/Ross That the Audited Financial Statements for the BC Games Society for the fiscal year 2023/2024 are approved as recommended by the Audit Committee and the Finance Committee. CARRIED 5. Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games Society’s Audited Financial Statements The audited statements for the Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games (held in 2023) were presented noting that our organization receives these for information only, the host society board reviews and approves these statements. MOTION: Cheung/Ulmer That the audited Financial Statements for the Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games are accepted as presented. CARRIED 6. President and CEO Report Alison provided a verbal overview of her written reporting, noting that: • W ith ‘Return to Games’ planning behind us, this past year has allowed us to deliver Games within an ‘as close to normal’ environment than we have experienced in the past four years. • The Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games were a resounding success on so many levels being one of the smallest communities to host a Games and by their admission, this was the biggest thing since they hosted in 2000! They are the first community to co-host with the local First Nation. • Indigenous partnerships continue to be a core component of the fabric of the Games. Strong engagement and awareness in Prince George; merchandise design partnership in Greater Vernon, and co-hosting in Quesnel, each community forges these partnerships differently depending on their own relationships. We hope the Games will continue to provide the opportunity to work together with common vision and shared success. • Maple Ridge, the return of the cancelled Games from 2020, faces the challenge of being a large urban community working to gain presence and awareness among the many events that surround them. Working relationships with the School District has come to light with this community and illustrates the need for the Games to create a stronger partnership through Ministry of Education and school districts across the province in the coming years. • Trail-Rossland and Kelowna are getting in gear for their 2026 BC Winter Games and 2026 BC Summer Games, respectively. Both regions are well-versed in delivering large sporting events, so they are both excited for the celebrations in 2026.
